Altera continues to expand in Penang
Published: 2009/02/13
ALTERA Corporation Sdn Bhd provides a model for Penang to spur economic growth in the semiconductor industry, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
He said Altera offers a good testimony of the excellent work force available in Penang.
"We are proud of Altera, they may have started small in the last decade but have expanded to having 1,600 employees now," he said at the press conference after launching the company's third building in Penang yesterday.
Altera's new building at the Asian Technical Centre in Penang indicates the company's long-term commitment in Malaysia, he added.
The company invested RM100 million to construct the 225,000 sq ft building located on 1.41ha at the Bayan Lepas Technoplex, which will help create 700 jobs.
According to Lim, Altera's expansion will strengthen and ensure Penang's competitiveness in the industry.
Since its inception in 1995, Altera has established itself as one of the country's key technical centres, offering research and development careers in the semiconductor industry.
The company has a strong university programme, having established more than 15 joint labs with leading local universities. - Bernama
